The Wente family has always farmed sustainably since their founding in 1883. At five generations and counting, their estate is America’s oldest continuously operated, family-owned winery. Each generation challenges themselves to improve on the last, prioritizing regenerative farming, energy efficiency, water conservation, fair labor practices, and civic engagement. One of only 10% of California wineries with sustainable certification for both their winery and vineyards, Wente Vineyards received the California Green Medal Leader Award for their achievement in sustainable winegrowing innovation and for serving as an inspiration to others. Recently, they transitioned their estate wines to lighter-weight glass bottles, saving a total of 290 tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2022. As they celebrate their 140th harvest, ethical farming is part of their nature, not only because it’s good for the environment and the community, but because it helps them craft the best wine possible from their vineyards.
